Josh McDaniels will be the next coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Coming into this year expectations were high for Jason Garrett.

After last season’s acquisition of Amari Cooper turned Dallas’ year completely around, the hope was that the momentum would carry over to 2019.

And for a while they did.

The Cowboys got off to a hot 3-0 start and things were looking good.

Then they ran into a New Orleans Saints team with no Drew Brees and lost. One week later, they fell to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. And just when it felt like things could not get any worse, they dropped a game to the New York Jets.

Since getting off to that hot start, Dallas has gone 3-5 over the last eight games.

After the Cowboys lost this past Sunday to a hobbled New England Patriots squad, Jerry Jones was understandably angry.

He laid the blame squarely on the coaching staff for the team’s troubles, suggesting there was too much talent there for the team to be performing the way it was performing.

Garrett’s contract expires at the end of this year, and there are zero indications that Jones wants him back.

In fact, according to Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report, Jones may not even wait until the deal expires. He may just straight up fire him if things don’t improve.

“It’s only a matter of time before current coach Jason Garrett is fired,” Freeman wrote in a recent column.

Not only that, but Freeman suggests that Jones already has his sights set on Garrett’s replacement.

“There is increasing belief around the league that owner Jerry Jones is focusing on two primary candidates as replacements—former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels,” he wrote.

While Meyer is obvious a fascinating name, it seems unlikely that Jones would risk hiring a college coach when a Bill Belichick disciple is available.

Jones has gone on record saying that he regrets not hiring Belichick when he had the opportunity, so the move would make sense on all fronts.

Is there still a chance that the Cowboys don’t hire McDaniels a their next head coach? Sure.

But is it an absolute lock that Garrett will not be coaching this squad next year? Barring a miraculous Super Bowl run – yes.
