Jayson Tatum honored a legend with his shoes Monday afternoon when the Boston Celtics took on the Toronto Raptors.

The 22-year-old is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and immensely proud of it. As such, it came as no surprise that when he heard St. Louis Cardinals legend Lou Brock had passed on Sunday night, he decided to pay tribute.

After his Celtics ultimately pulled out a massive 111-89 blowout victory over the Raptors in Game 5, Tatum took some time to speak on Brock’s legacy.

“Obviously everybody knows he played for the St. Louis Cardinals,” he said.

“One of the best players ever in the MLB, one of the best players to ever play for the Cardinals. I never got to see him play, but I know what he means to that organization and what he means to the city of St. Louis.

“I had the Cardinal Jordan 34 designed, I had those on today, and unfortunately he passed away yesterday. So I just wanted to shed some light on that to all the people back home.”

Tatum has long been recognized as one of the NBA’s most thoughtful young guys, always one to pay due respect to the legends that came before him — and not just when it comes to basketball. His gesture on Monday night is a nice little reminder of precisely why he has that reputation.
