Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks ended the 2022-23 NBA season about as disappointingly as any team ever could.
Despite the NBA Trade Deadline acquisition of Kyrie Irving, the Mavs failed to make the playoffs and now face the prospect of their new star leaving elsewhere over the summer.
This week, Kidd was confronted with the idea of losing Irving to free agency.
His reaction to the possibility was telling.

“I think he truly is happy here,” Kidd said in an interview with Rachel Nichols.
“I think he wants to be here. But that doesn’t guarantee us that he’s going to stay. He has the option and the opportunity as a professional to look elsewhere, because he is a free agent, and I don’t want to take that away from him, being a player who was in that situation.
“We’re going to do everything to keep him. At the end of the day it’s his decision, but we believe we’ll see what that is, but we hope that we’ve done everything to make him comfortable, and want to be a Mav for life.”
Irving has made his preferred NBA team for next season no secret. Whether he will ultimately get his wish or not remains to be seen, though.

On paper, he and Luka Doncic should definitely be able to accomplish at least what Doncic and Jalen Brunson could.
But thus far, that simply hasn’t happened.
Will Irving return to the Mavs next season, salvage his legacy and right last year’s wrongs? Time will tell.
