Jaguars To Name Matt Rhule Next Head Coach?

Will the Jaguars name Matt Rhule as their next head coach?

Early Saturday morning ESPN NFL insider Diana Russini reported that Jacksonville would be dismissing head coach Doug Marrone following the team’s Week 17 game.

The Jaguars quickly responded with an official statement denying the report.

“Reports that Doug Marrone will be dismissed after Sunday’s game are 100 percent incorrect,” the statement read.

“Owner Shad Khan will meet with his football staff, which includes coaching and personnel, midweek next week.”

Despite Jacksonville’s statement, the writing on the wall is clear. Team brass is cleaning up and getting rid of all parties responsible for the team’s disappointing run since the 2017 AFC Title game.

It started with Tom Coughlin’s departure and it will continue with Marrone’s, regardless of what the team is publicly saying right now.

Over the course of two-and-change seasons with Jacksonville Marrone has recorded a record of 21-28. Since winning the AFC South and ultimately falling to the New England Patriots in the 2017 AFC Championship Game, the Jaguars have gone 10-21.

Marrone came to Jacksonville after amassing a 25-25 record with Syracuse.

The obvious question now becomes: who will the Jaguars replace Marrone with?

According to Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report, Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is getting serious consideration from many NFL execs around the league.

“Based on conversations with NFL power players over the last month, the top candidate won’t be Urban Meyer or Lincoln Riley from the college ranks; and it won’t be a former NFL head coach like Mike McCarthy or Ron Rivera,” he wrote.

“The top candidate? Baylor’s Matt Rhule.”

Will the Jaguars ultimately move in and scoop up Rhule? Time will tell, but based on the interest he is receiving, it would certainly make a lot of sense.
