Duke Cheerleader’s Photos Cause A Stir After Tennessee Loss

A Duke cheerleader’s photos caused something of a stir this weekend following the program’s loss to Tennessee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Heading into Saturday, it was widely assumed that the Volunteers would likely prevail over the Blue Devils. On paper, top to bottom, Tennessee appeared to be too physical and too tough for Duke.

In reality it ended up playing out that way exactly.

Between Kyle Filipowski having to leave the game after catching an errant elbow and the way the Vols kept Duke scoreless for nearly a seven-minute stretch at one point, the winning side simply outmuscled the losing side.

Ahead of Duke’s game, the program’s social media folks decided to post a photo of a cheerleader named Maddie doing a wild move with the caption, “Hey, @dukembb – we’re still dancing.”

That proved to be a mistake. Afterward, the Blue Devils’ many haters used that same cheerleader post against them.

“This didn’t age well,” one person wrote.

While Duke may have some egg on its face over that post, their loss is Maddie’s gain. She now has more than 1,600 followers on social media and that number will likely go up a lot in the coming days.

Her posts also seem to be doing great engagement now.

Obviously Maddie isn’t the only cheerleader to have gone viral doing March Madness. A Utah State dancer also blew up online this past week, leading to her social media coming under increased scrutiny as well.

Big picture, the NCAA Tournament is always better when Duke is in it and gets far. But it wasn’t in the cards this year.

Will the Blue Devils and their cheerleaders be able to bounce back stronger come next season?

Time will tell.
