Matt Rhule Makes First Big Coaching Move With Panthers
Matt Rhule made his first big coaching move with the Panthers this week.
Realizing that he needed to fill out his staff with competent, respected names, Rhule reportedly has reached out to LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady.
Brady is considered the driving force behind Joe Burrow’s transformation from a college journeyman to Heisman winning consensus No. 1 draft pick.
According to Football Scoop, Rhule wants Smith to come on board as his offensive coordinator.
“New Carolina head coach Matt Rhule is interested in speaking with LSU’s Joe Brady about the offensive coordinator position with the Panthers,” the report noted.
“LSU officials have repeatedly stated throughout the season they expect Brady to return, and had no concerns about him leaving for another college job.
“However, the opportunity to become an NFL offensive coordinator would seem to be something Brady would have to strongly consider,” it continued.
“LSU has maintained confidence throughout the fall it could keep Brady away from other college programs, but the thought of an NFL team coming after him has been a nearly unspoken, yet ever present, concern for those who bleed purple and gold.”
At this point, it is also worth noting that Rule and Brady share an agent.
Rhule is less than a week removed from signing a massive $60 million contract with Carolina that could be worth $70 million with incentives.
Presumably, in his conversations with management, he secured a similarly large spending budget for his coaching staff.
If so, the Panthers stealing away Brady might be a lot likelier than it otherwise would be.
