Chip Kelly’s Salary: How Much Is UCLA Coach’s Buyout If He Gets Fired?

What is Chip Kelly’s salary? How much is UCLA paying him in order to completely run its football program into the ground? At what point will they simply choose to go the buyout route with him and cut their losses?

Kelly signed a five-year deal with the Bruins back in 2017. That means he is only three seasons into a deal that is going to last a while.

Following a six-year absence from the collegiate ranks, Kelly made sure to guarantee himself a nice little payday in Los Angeles regardless of how things turned out.

Kelly’s deal is worth $23.3 million. If he is fired without cause during any of his first four seasons, he is owed $9 million. Considering ex-head coach Jim Mora had a $12 million buyout, that is not too bad at all.

On Friday, news emerged that 30 UCLA football players demanded a third party to come in and ensure their safety for the upcoming season.

Specifically, these players want protections in place for anyone that chooses to report safety violations next season and the opportunity to not be punished should they make any such report.

The move is seen as a damning condemnation of Kelly’s leadership and speaks to an utter lack of faith in him as a head coach.

Over the course of his time in Westwood Kelly has racked up a 7-17 record.
