Chair Umpire Marijana Veljovic Stands Up To Roger Federer

Chair umpire Marijana Veljovic stood up to Roger Federer this week.

Their encounter immediately went viral.

Veljovic showed zero indication that she was at all intimidated by Federer in the pair’s recent confrontation.

During this week’s Australian Open quarterfinals match against Tennys Sandgren, Veljovic immediately called Federer for a code violation over his swearing and refused to back down after making the call.

Veljovic’s boldness is a big reason why she has become son popular in recent years.

A gold-badge judge who has overseen a pair of grand slam finals and the Fed Cup Final, she is notorious for how tough she is.

“Whether you are a girl or a guy, if you do well and they think you are good enough to do the biggest matches, it feels amazing that our sport is allowing us that,” Veljovic said recently.

“Tennis is giving us the right opportunities. Normally we don’t have enough female officials; we have 3.5 times less female officials than males.”

While that disparity still exists, Veljovic is obviously working her hardest to close the gap in any way which she can.
