Carolina Panthers Will Tank For Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence

The Carolina Panthers will tank for Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, by all indications. Given the team’s need for a quarterback, it makes sense.

Ever since his freshman campaign, Lawrence has widely been regarded as a generational talent. In each of the last two years, most have regarded him as the quarterback that would go first overall in the draft if he were draft-eligible.

Next season, barring some sort of unforeseen catastrophe, he will go with the top overall selection to whichever organization happens to have it.

And it appears as though Carolina really wants to have it.

According to Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report, the Panthers are considering tanking hard for the right to ultimately come away with Lawrence next season.

“Something I’ve said for months on Stick to Football and Twitter is that many sources around the league think the Panthers will attempt to ‘tank’ for Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) in the 2021 class,” he said.

“Moves like this one make it hard to imagine they’re trying to win in 2020.”

The Panthers are in a weird place right now where they clearly want to move on from quarterback Cam Newton, but don’t currently have any half-decent quarterbacks to do it with. Lawrence would obviously change all that.

Will the Tank-for-Trevor strategy end up working? We are about one year away from finding out for certain.
