Carolina Panthers Releasing Cam Newton?

Are the Carolina Panthers releasing Cam Newton? Things are trending in that direction.

Originally the expectation was that a trade would be worked out. However, multiple things are making the prospect of that difficult.

On Tuesday afternoon, Carolina announced in a statement that it had given Newton permission to seek out a trade. One day later, a report surfaced that the Chicago Bears were perhaps interested in the former league MVP.

Not much later, however, the Bears went out and completed a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for veteran quarterback Nick Foles. Just like that, the Newton-to-Chicago dream was dead.

So where does that leave Newton now? Some thought the Los Angeles Chargers might be a logical fit, given them striking out in the Tom Brady Sweepstakes. However, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the franchise has instead opted to move forward with last year’s backup, Tyrod Taylor.

Just like that, another potential opening for Newton vanished.

“There is no known landing spot for Cam Newton right now,” Rapoport reported. “At this point it seems the most likely option is a release. We’ve got no official word on that yet but that is certainly a possibility for Cam Newton.”

Newton getting released would certainly come as a shock, but at this point in time it really seems like there are no other options available.
