Christmas prep aside, this has been a busy week for Beal. On Wednesday night, he and the Wizards made their regular season debut against the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite a game-high 31 points from him and a triple-double from Russell Westbrook, Washington fell 113-107.
Although Beal was disappointed with the loss, he loved the defensive intensity his club showed in the second half.
“It’s just a matter of your will and you wanting to get in a stance and defend,” he said postgame.
“I took pride in that. I think we all took pride in that. We weren’t guarding the way we knew we could in the first half. We came out in the second half way more physical, more talkative, got our switching together and we cleaned up a lot of stuff that we were slipping up on in the first half.

“From that standpoint, it was great. It was great to see that we were able to make those adjustments on the fly. At the same time, we have to be better.”
This is going to be a big year for the Wizards. If they can surprise folks, make a little noise in the East, and stay competitive through the first round of the playoffs, trade speculation surrounding Beal will likely die down.
However, if the team struggles, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see the rumors intensify much in the way they did during this past offseason.
Next up for the Wizards: a showdown against the Orlando Magic on Saturday afternoon.
