Alabama, Nick Saban Lose Big 2021 Recruit

Alabama and Nick Saban lost a big 2021 recruit this past week. Drake Maye will now be going to North Carolina.

Late last summer, Maye announced that he would be coming to join the Crimson Tide. Fresh off a great run at Myers Park, the four-star quarterback looked like a future star for Saban.

Unfortunately, just a few months later, Maye has decided that he would prefer to go elsewhere. On Friday afternoon, he announced his decommitment from Alabama via Twitter and revealed he would be becoming a Tar Heel instead.

Maye’s move comes on the heels of Alabama recently flipping five-star recruit Bryce Young from the 2020 class. Maye likely feels like his opportunity to get significant playing time was diminished by this move.

“First off, I’d like to thank Coach Saban and the entire staff for the opportunity to play at the University of Alabama,” he wrote.

“After sitting down with my family I have decided to de-commit from Alabama. With that being said, I’m looking forward to playing for coach Brown at the University of North Carolina.”

Maye’s older brother is former North Carolina basketball star Luke Maye, so his ties to the institution run deep. Moreover, his father Mark once upon a time played quarterback for the school.

What sort of impact will Maye ultimately have on North Carolina’s offense? We’re just a few years away from getting our answer.
