2 NFL Teams Emerge As Baker Mayfield Frontrunners

Baker Mayfield entered the 2022-23 NFL season hoping to rejuvenate his career.

The Cleveland Browns had just quit on him and the Carolina Panthers seemed to be providing him with a path to become a franchise quarterback again.

Unfortunately, Mayfield just couldn’t get it together.

He struggled in his new surroundings and eventually lost the starting job. Then he got kicked to the curb by Carolina, picked up by the Los Angeles Rams, and aside from two good games, didn’t do much of note in L.A. either.

For the year Mayfield finished with a career-low 2163 passing yards, 10 touchdowns through the air and a 60.0 completion percentage. His wife made more headlines in 2022-23 for her provocative outfits than he did for any substantive on-the-field accomplishments.

So where does the 27-year-old go from here?

Well, it appears as though there are two NFL teams legitimately interested in his services at the moment.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the New Orleans Saints are a squad to watch.

“Another quarterback to watch in free agency for New Orleans would be Baker Mayfield,” he wrote.

“The Saints staff was high on Mayfield ahead of the 2018 draft, and those old draft evals can definitely have an impact down the road with guys as they get older and hit free agency, especially when there’s a need that can be tied to it.”

If not the Saints, the Baltimore Ravens have also been mentioned as a possible suitor.

As noted by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, Baltimore has “always liked and respected” Mayfield to the point where they could see him as a viable option in light of the uncertainty surrounding Lamar Jackson.

Mayfield comes with a lot of concerns. Videos of him throwing passes have left a lot to be desired, as do some of the off-the-field dramatics he becomes entangled in like his infamous leaked DMs scandal.

All that being said, he is still a somewhat competent quarterback who was very highly decorated at the collegiate level. And he did have two good games with the Rams, for whatever that is worth.

Someone will ultimately take a chance on Mayfield in 2023-24. If Colin Kaepernick can still get a workout from an NFL team in this day and age, Mayfield can certainly at the very least earn a backup gig.

Who will Mayfield ultimately be playing for when the new season rolls around, though? Time will tell.
